Sheriff's Message

A Message From Sheriff Chris Houston ---

Homeland Security Most people are tired of hearing about this issue and want someone to assure them that they can enjoy the same level of freedom and safety that they have been accustomed to all of their lives.  The truth of the matter is that the terrorist’s goal is to make sure that Americans do not live with such reassurance of safety.  The greatest goal of terrorist is to kill as many Americans as possible.  That having been said, most Americans want to talk about securing our borders.  So far, I have not seen, nor heard, any real attempt by our nation’s leaders to provide adequate security at our borders.  In fact, it has been said many times that our Federal Government does not have the resources or the man power to accomplish this.  Our government is increasing these efforts, but we have seen assassinations of presidents over the years which demonstrate that there is no such thing as real security.  The Secret Service will attest to this assumption.  It is my belief that even with stronger efforts made at our borders, that there can be no such thing as Homeland Security until our nation’s law enforcement steps up with the support of their citizens and creates Hometown Security.

Citizens will need training on what activities to report, and reassuring that it is their civic duty to report suspicious activities. Too many of us have adopted an “it is not my problem” attitude.  The people must get involved with a right attitude.  Law enforcement was originally a responsibility of the people until they started full-time paid law enforcement.  Even then, the people still retained a strong sense of ownership in how laws were to be enforced.  I believe, even today, that no agency can provide more law enforcement to the people than that which the people are willing to accept.  Security is not convenient and the people will have to embrace it before the politicians will vote for it.  Homeland Security will be achieved only if the people demand it, and it will start with Hometown Security.  Call me if you would like to start a  USA on Watch Program in your community.
